Israel closes main Gaza border crossings, tightening 14-year-old siege

Gaza Strip, with more than 2 million residents, have been under a strict Israeli siege since mid-2007.

Israel occupation decided on Tuesday to close the Karem abu Salem crossing, Gaza’s main commercial trade route, to all entries except humanitarian aid and fuel.

The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation said Defence Minister Benny Gantz ordered the closure due to the continued launching of incendiary balloons from Gaza.

A Palestinian official said that the Israeli occupation had been preventing the entry of construction materials to the Palestinian side for a couple of days.

Israeli media reported that tens of fires broke out near the eastern Gaza borders due to the launching of balloons towards Israeli settlements.
